TODAY’S TRIVIA: Happy Thursday!

I will ask this question every year until this streak is broken, and after last night’s games, it seems relevant.

  • The Oilers beat the Golden Knights 1-0 in OT to advance to the Western Conference final (EDM wins 4-1), where they could face another Canadian team, the Winnipeg Jets, although that does seem unlikely (down 3-1 against the Dallas Stars)

  • The Maple Leafs have some work to do to move towards the Eastern Conference final after a 6-1 loss to the defending champion Panthers (FLA lead series 3-2)

The Montreal Canadiens were the last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup.

What year did they last win it?

Hint: The “Habs” beat the Wayne Gretzky-led LA Kings in 5 games

Fun Fact: The Montreal Canadiens are often called the “Habs.”

The nickname “Habs” is likely due to a reporting error in 1924. It was reported that the “H” in the logo stood for “les habitants,” which is the name given to the original settlers of “New France” in the 17th century. What the “H” actually stands for is “Hockey” because the team’s official name is “le Club de Hockey Canadien.”

But of course, the nickname, “Habs,” just stuck.
